ENVIRONMENT

The ARRA provides additional funding for existing programs to provide cleanup of former industrial and commercial sites, hazardous and toxic waste, and leaking underground storage tanks. Funding is also provided to assist state enforcement of petroleum cleanup, as well as programs to reduce diesel pollutant emissions. The federal government will also directly perform environmental initiatives within the state, such as flood prevention, wildlife management, and improvements to national lands.

Hazardous Substance Superfund

Additional federal funds will accelerate ongoing cleanup activities or initiate new cleanup projects at 50 Superfund sites, which are locations that require hazardous waste removal.

USDA NRCS Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations

Federal funds are specifically provided for improvements to watershed structures and the natural landscape to control erosion and abate flooding.

Leaking Underground Storage Tank Fund Program

Additional federal funds are provided to states for the cleanup of petroleum leaks from underground storage tanks.

State Clean Diesel Grant Program

Federal funds are provided for a grant and low-cost revolving loan program to meet State goals of reduction of diesel emissions.

Wildlife Refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will invest more funds in over 830 projects to build visitors centers, improve infrastructure, and bolster conservation at national wildlife refuges and hatcheries across the nation. These funds do not pass through state government.

U.S. Geological Survey - Stream Gauge Upgrades

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will upgrade to high-data radio (HDR) technology, upgrade all stream gauges nationwide with new technologies for stream flow measurement, and remove abandoned stream gauges, groundwater wells, and cableways

National Park Improvements

The National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration will invest more funds in nearly 800 projects to preserve and protect national icons and historic landscapes, improve energy efficiency and renewable energy use, remediate abandoned mine lands, and protect and restore buildings at historically black colleges and universities. These funds do not pass through state government.

Brownfields Jobs Training Grants

Additional funds are available for environmental job training projects that will promote job creation and economic development by facilitating the assessment, remediation, or preparation of Brownfields sites.
